Apathy
** For the era that weeps. Long slender fingers tipping his cigar, leaving it then in the sleek black ashtray. The putrid dark cloud moved towards the ceiling, where it hung like a thick curtain at eye level. Paying this no heed as he moved his fingers back tapping at the keys. Eyes narrowed, head down as he glanced only once at the framed picture to his left. The glance itself, though the feelings could hardly tear away to attend to the work at hand. So many young lives, he reviewed. So many he deleted from the system. Rolling his fingers over his brow and then turning his full attention back to the thin glowing screen. The mahogany reflecting each movement in it's mirroresque surface. Movements were slow like the smoke that trailed to the curtain, paced, methodical. Pausing at the file of a single RUNner. Looking for the longest time at the youth. Clicking then over the innocent face. -DECEASED- Looking as the word held no meaning for him now. Apathy, ran it's hands through his hair, clouding his thoughts. Raking it's long, precise talons over his actions. This era stated itself louder than the sexual revolution. This era demanded strict attention more than the industrial revolution. This era, this very era, screamed at the top of its lungs, to be heard over all others previous. Closing his eyes, and shutting the monitor off, as the files would keep processing. Gathering his coat, that cost more than the computer at his side, and putting it on. Moving over the black tile, flicking off the tiffany lamp. **
** As each step took its tempo single words came to mind. -Step- /Scandals/ -Step- /Lies/ -Step- /Failures/ -Step- /Indecencies/ -Step- His hand pressed the flush buttons near the door. With a gentle swish it opened. A small burst of air pressed against his white locks. He stepped out of his office, adjusting his buttoned cuffs. -Step- /Murder/ -Step- /Death/ -Step- /Killed/ . . .Pausing as he summoned the elevator, as the thoughts echoed away as the footfalls did. Apathy clung tightly to him. In the elevator he quietly recited to himself, emotionally drained. . . ** Our father, in heaven. . . hallowed be your name. ** The elevator dinged as it stopped at the desired floor. He felt Apathy recoil, though could not show this upon his face. ** Your kingdom come, Thy will be done. . .On Earth as it is in Heaven. . . ** He felt the blows, as his nonchalance dropped off him like water off a ducks back. Reflecting back on the face, just the face. Another human. . . . a living breathing /child/ . . . ** Give us this day, our daily bread. . .
